The '''Duchies of Vinci''' are an army of highly advanced humans assisted by their robotic automatons. On the battlefield, they rely on ranged warfare using crossbows and cannons, supported by the more resilient automa.

The Vinci were once a collection of poor villages who discovered the intelligence-enhancing Mindstones in the aftermath of the Rift. The Vinci have gained great wealth and knowledge, but guard their secrets and their Mindstones closely to protect themselves from poverty. However, over time, their isolationism has fostered rivalry between the Duchies, causing them to stagnate.

==Background Story==
The Vinci were once amongst the poorest people in Tyria, a meager collection of villages built on swampland. Without any source of wealth, they were subsistence farmers who were largely disregarded by the wider [[Human Empire|Empire]] and other outsiders as mere peasants.

When the Great Rift opened, the Vinci’s homelands were devastated by violent earthquakes. Soon after these quakes however, glowing stones began to emerge from the depths of the swamps. At first, the stones were simply used to create jewelry, but soon the stones started to affect people’s minds and made them smarter, leading to a new time of technological and cultural progress. They became known as Mindstones soon after, and it was not long before the Vinci had taken every stone that they could find until almost none remained undiscovered.

Influenced by their Mindstones, the Vinci started building machines to drain the swamps and reclaim the land. They expanded their farmland, built great cities, and became very rich, very quickly. The Vinci established universities that attracted the best minds in all the land, which led to the invention of robots, known as Automa. These robots assisted the Vinci with farming, construction, and generally served to boost the advancement of the Vinci even more.

As the Vinci began to prosper, they found themselves surrounded by enemies. Outsiders sought to claim these newfound riches for themselves, and began to stake claims upon the Vinci and their Mindstones. When conflict broke out, the Vinci armies turned the tides and soon conquered their neighbours.

In order to defend themselves from future conflicts, the Vinci turned their cities into fortresses and expelled all foreign diplomats and scholars. The isolated Duchies became even more reliant on advanced technology to make up for their losses in trade. Now, Universities are the real power in Vinci, while Dukes have become mere figureheads. This led to them being highly insular and suspicious, with their universities waging secret wars of sabotage and espionage on each other.

==Play Style==
In many ways, the Duchies of Vinci are similar tactically to the Humans. However, the great differences here is that the Duchies rely heavily on their crossbows. While not capable of punching through armor like a gun, they have plenty of range so they can fire without worry. Also unique is their Automa, which are effectively immune to Morale like the Undead.

The '''Battle Brothers''' are superhuman warriors that have been empowered through gene-mods and special training to bring about their Founder’s vision of an uplifted humanity.

Their pursuit of this vision at any cost led to a violent civil war which nearly destroyed humanity itself, and in pursuit of their enemies fleeing this conflict, they found themselves lost in the Sirius Sector. The Battle Brothers have not relented however, and they go to any length to unite and uplift all of humanity.

==Background Story==
The Battle Brothers were created by a visionary scientist, known as ''the Founder'', who used a series of gene-mods in order to enhance soldiers beyond their human limits. The Battle Brothers were soon deployed to maintain unity and peace over Earth and its nearby colonies, with the gene-mods proving wildly successful, and many seeking to join their ranks.

The Founder revealed his vision of a united and uplifted humanity, capable of thriving throughout the galaxy with the use of advanced gene-mods. In order to overcome political obstacles to his vision, the Founder led a daring coup to seize control of humanity’s colonies. Many Battle Brothers followed him, overtaking the previous administration in order to improve the lives of many within the colonies, whilst other Battle Brothers rejected the Founder’s ambitions, and soon a civil war erupted that engulfed all of humanity.

The civil war proved to be incredibly destructive. On Earth, the fighting was particularly fierce and some feared that it might render it uninhabitable, and a portion of humanity chose to flee the situation, commandeering one of the Founder’s fleets. The Battle Brothers pursued these refugees, eventually meeting them in battle at the edge of known space. They were met with a surprisingly fierce resistance, with the Founder losing his life in the ensuing battle shortly before a massive wormhole engulfed both fleets, and left them stranded in the Sirius Sector.

Scattered by the wormhole, the Battle Brothers have moved quickly to establish themselves in the Sirius Sector. Stranded far from the rest of humanity with their Founder slain, the Brothers still hope to carry out his vision. Even as advancements are made in gene-sciences, the Battle Brothers remain steadfast symbols of the Founder’s dream for humanity, and the their unwavering faith has turned them into a symbol of humanity’s potential and resilience.

The Battle Brothers now serve as the highly elite army of the Conduit, a genetic and mental duplicate of the original Founder. They seek to reunite the shattered human factions in Sirius under their rule, finding a means of recontacting Earth and enforcing their vision of a united humanity. Other factions and species are viewed as little more than impediments to this goal which the Battle Brothers will overcome, and nothing will cause them to relent in their pursuit of the Founder’s vision.

Battle Brother Detachments are elite battle companies of superhuman warriors with highly specialized training and tactics. Stranded in the Sirius Sector, the Detachments settled a number of worlds which they have adapted to their unique needs.

The Detachments changed over time as well, becoming more distinct and developing their own ideas of how best to serve their Founder. Now, Detachments struggle to maintain a sense of unity and purpose as they become more distinct.

Following the genetic innovations of the Founder, the Battle Brothers were soon deployed to maintain unity and peace over Earth and its nearby colonies. Early space travel had proven an expensive and difficult process, and as a result, Battle Brothers were assigned to each colony as a permanent garrison. These garrisons were formed into the first Detachments, serving as their world’s first line of defence against insurgency and civil conflict.

Detachments rapidly adapted to combat on their respective worlds, developing unique tactics, equipment and roles to excel in localized conflicts. By the time that the first wave of recruits had been fully trained, most Detachments had already developed their own unique culture, skills and traditions, which set them apart from the original Battle Brothers. Many Detachments became symbols of stability and cultural identity on their respective home worlds, gathering respect and political influence as their reputation grew.

At the height of the Detachments’ influence, the Founder revealed his vision of a united and uplifted humanity, capable of thriving throughout the galaxy with the use of advanced genemods. This has fostered a strong sense of independence and even rivalry among a number of detachments, united only by their loyalty to the original Founder and his successors, the Conduits.

The '''Alien Hives''' are a faction of aliens using biotechnology, and is made up of a variety of sub-species which come from the remote frontiers of the galaxy, striving to find their niche in Sirius.

When they first arrived, they were viewed as monstrous invaders, but after a long war of extermination, breakthroughs in communication lead to a fragile peace. Now, the Hives must come to terms with the legacy of the long war and decide how they are to adapt.

==Background Story==
Over the course of their evolution, the Alien Hives specialised into a number of different roles and environments. Despite this divergence, these sub-species gradually united into a strict caste system led by the apex predator of their world; the Hive Lord. Each caste became specialised in different roles, working together in harmony as their civilization grew.

With a lack of workable metals on their home world, their technology came to be based on psychic abilities and biochemistry, and this knowledge allowed them to adapt themselves and gradually alter native animals as well. The Alien Hives believed that these changes allowed them to exist in more perfect harmony with their world. Perhaps the strangest of these were the ones which came to be adapted for space travel. Alien Hives travel through the stars using massive creatures which they’ve bred for this purpose. These vessels travel from world to world, always requiring a great amount of atmosphere and nutrition for them to store before traveling between the stars. These ships are homes to crews who maintain them, some of whom never step off the ships on which they were born.

After traveling through a swathe of the Frontier, the Alien Hives reached the Sirius Sector. Their arrival set off a series of conflicts with the factions in Sirius, as communication proved difficult and the Alien Hives were assumed to be hostile due to their alien appearance and nature. They soon were locked into a war of extermination with the various species of Sirius, which only concluded when the [[DAO Union|DAOU]] managed to communicate with one of their Hive Lords. While it took time to come to true understanding, this opened a path to peace between the species of Sirius and the Hives.

Peace provided its own challenges for the Alien Hives, as they soon found themselves confronted with a number of alien ideas and values that challenged the structure of their society. They strive to stand on equal footing with the other Species in the Sirius Sector, ensuring their migratory routes are protected and defending their claims to various worlds in the sector, by force if necessary. Some in the lower castes have begun demanding new rights, undermining the harmonious working of the castes while certain Hive Lords have rejected peace entirely, fearing that the corrupting influence of outsiders might ultimately destroy their way of life completely.

'''Wood Elves''' are Elves who live in harmony with the forest and the magical beings within. Although lightly armored, they are able to move quickly and strike at foes from far away, while relying on the trees themselves to slow their enemies.

Over the centuries, Wood Elves have been betrayed by outsiders and even their own kin who have cut away at the edges of the forest. Now, they look on both outsiders and new ideas with suspicion, unwilling to bend in their traditions, even as their forests continue to shrink and the world threatens to leave them behind.

==Background Story==
The ancestors of the Wood Elves migrated to the Heartwoods to find a new home as human tribes had begun to encroach on their ancestral lands. Here, they met the Treelords, powerful beings who dwelt in the Heartwoods, and the two forged a pact. The Elves would protect and nurture the forest, never harming it without need, and in exchange, the Treelords would protect and provide for them.

When Humans arrived at the edge of the forest, they began to clear land for farming and cut trees for fuel. Together, the Elves and Treelords drove the humans back, though the humans held onto the land which they had cleared. While many Elves viewed the humans and their ways with distrust, others began to learn from their foe, taking metal weapons and tools from them, and they even began trading with them. They called themselves [[High Elves]], as they began to build stone towers and carve out Kingdoms in the Heartwoods, claiming the forest lands for themselves. The remaining Wood Elves and their allied Treelords fought back against their former kin.

The Wood Elves won a costly victory, exiling the High Elves, and leaving their old towers to fall to ruin. The Wood Elves renewed their pacts and clung closely to their traditions, distrusting any who strayed from them. So it was that the Wood Elves remained in isolation for centuries, maintaining their old ways of life until the arrival of the Havoc Gods.

The followers of the Havoc Gods raided the forests, taking lumber for their weapons of war, and burning what they did not need. The Wood Elves fought desperately to drive them back, but it was soon clear that their enemies were too many. So, when the High Elves offered an alliance, the Wood Elves reluctantly accepted it. This alliance quickly grew, and the Wood Elves conceded large parts of their forest to give theirallies lumber for weapons, ships, and fortifications.

Yet when victory came, the Wood Elves had little to show for it, as their former allies claimed the land where the woods had once been, and some even sought to encroach further. Now, the Wood Elves fiercely guard what remains, but the forest continues to shrink with each passing year. Even some Treelords believe that their days are numbered as the forest continues to shrink.

The Wood Elves are an hybrid faction, containing both elite ranged units and powerful monsters (some of which can be upgraded into Wizards). Their entire army has the Strider ability and this synergize with their advantages in terrain which would normally impair other factions.

The '''Volcanic Dwarves''' are Dwarves who have fully embraced magic, and now harness the power of fire to defeat their foes. They reject the heavy armour of their kin, relying on their gods’ divine strength to allow them to continue fighting, and on the volcanic beasts that fight alongside them.

The Volcanic Dwarves have abandoned the traditions and gods of their ancestors. These Dwarves did not return to their holds when the Orcs were defeated, as the scars of their humiliation ran too deep. Their thirst for revenge has led them south, to a new pantheon of Gods who have fostered their warlike ways.

== Background Story==
The Dwarven tribes were once spread throughout Tyria, but as the plains were settled by humanity and Orcs and Giants came to the grasslands, the Dwarves retreated into the mountains. They made their homes in their mountains, creating powerful fortresses surrounded by terrace farms on the heights, and dug mines deep below.

When Havoc arrived in Tyria, the Northern Dwarfholds were soon overrun. The northern Dwarves fought back even after losing their homes, and the southern Dwarves joined with the Great Alliance to protect their homes. With the Dwarven armies on campaign against Havoc, the Orcs attacked and soon conquered the Dwarfholds.

The remaining Dwarves had a difficult life under the Orcs. The Orcs drove the Dwarves out of their holds and took whatever they wished from their subjects. The Dwarves held little status, reduced to performing hard labour in the fields and mines, and with their former allies too weakened to help, they lived under cruel Orcish rule for generations.

When the Rift opened, it damaged a number of Dwarfholds. Many Orcs were killed by cave-ins, others were forced to abandon the holds and leave behind much of their armour and weapons. The Dwarves took the opportunity to rise up, using whatever weapons and tools they could find to seize back their destroyed holds. While most Dwarves returned to their old homes, some no longer felt that they belonged there. These Dwarves felt the scars of their defeat particularly strongly and wanted revenge. They rampaged through the steppes, using whatever weapons they could take to pillage and destroy any Orc tribes they found.

These Dwarves continued their rampage until they arrived to the Drake Mountains, a volcanic mountain range along the south of Tyria. They met a pantheon of warlike Volcanic Gods who encouraged them to embrace their rage. These Gods taught them to channel magic through runic tattoos, scars, and wounds on their bodies.

Many Dwarves chose to follow them, adopting a sort of monastic lifestyle in the mountains, honing their fighting skills and learning to enter a battle-trance. They are eager to get revenge on the Orcs and anyone else who they believe insults their honour. They have little interest in industry or craftsmanship, instead they live simple lives, honouring their new Gods, and slaying any who would question their honour or skill.
